It doesn't get much better than a day on the Blue Ridge Parkway with bright sunshine, 65 degree temperatures and fall leaves! Today, traveling the Parkway between Milepost 331 (at the intersection of the DiamondbackNC aka NC Hwy. 226-A) and Milepost 344 (intersecting NC. Hwy. 80 aka the Devil's Tail), I could feel my blood pressure slowing down. Mountain air, ideal temperatures and winding roads. Ahhh.
Between Mileposts 331 and Little Switzerland, at Milepost 334, close to fifty percent of the leaves have fallen. However, remaining are bright colors with scenic views of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Traveling south, leaves have fallen, but not to this extent. Without rain or rain storms, the dry weather is hanging on and leaves are staying on the trees.
Taking the exit at Milepost 344/NC Hwy. 80, this picturesque and curvy road opens to beautiful straight aways with stunning pops of color. Many trees are still green! Remember, look for Lake Tahoma. It's a popular site for photographers.
Are you looking for off the beaten path backroads? I'd suggest NC. 80 (The Devil's Tail) and NC. Hwy. 226-A (The DiamondbackNC). Both routes are gorgeous, both are curvy and both open to beautiful views. Next week, I'll share images of the Lake James Loop. Leaves should be perfect! Driving NC Hwy. 126 is a treat.
We do have some property closures, coming up for Little Switzerland. This is the LAST weekend for Emerald Village, The Switzerland Cafe (the General Store will remain open through November) and Big Lynn Lodge. The Orchard at Altapass has already closed for the season.
